Description
Coconut shell is another material from a coconut palm, which shows a
particular potential for the development of furniture, furnishings, and
related Philippine products. The furniture and furnishings industry and the
fashion accessories manufacturer used coconut shell for producing
handicraft items like ash trays, bowls, spoons, buttons, ornamentals, hair
clips, pins, cups, wind chimes and others.

A whole range of boxes, lamps, tabletops, chairs and household accessories
using crushed and laminated shells have found acceptance in both local and
foreign markets. Gluing small shell pieces to a wooden or fiberglass
surface to upgrade an otherwise simple material is one of the elegant uses
for coconut shell. Shell lamination varies in colors from dark brown for
mature shells, to honey or ivory white for young shells.

The shell can be cut into different shapes and the possibility of various
patterns and combinations for lamination is endless. When crushed and
combined, shell laminates are at per with the quality and appearance of
tortoise shell or ivory.
Extraction
Coconut shell comes from the fruit of the coconut palm. The shell can be
extracted by removing it from the fruit cover. Dehusking, splitting and
scraping are the processes to obtain the coconut shell alone.

The outer husk of the coconut is removed and one of the tree eyes pierced
to drain the juice from the fruit. Afterward the nut is split and the coco
meat removed through scraping.
