Description
The splints from the stems and flower stalks of the bigao grass are used
for screen or window shades. It can also be used for fences, making side
walls of houses and sometimes even for covering the floors. The handicraft
sector uses bigao material for making baskets, trays, novelty and souvenir
items.
Bigao is a very tall, course, erect, grass attaining a height of 1-3 m.
The leaves, partly covering the stem, are tapering, about 70 cm long and
between 3-5 cm broad. The flower clusters are loose, long, feathery in
appearance, and made of great number of simple branching spikelets. It
grows in colonies at medium to high altitudes, especially in the mountain
province of Luzon.
